When we look around at the demographic of our parish, what do we notice? We have an aging population. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that; we live in a part of Australia which is popular for retirees. We are, however, charged by Jesus with growing our parish community – to Go and Make Disciples (Matt 28:19). Worshiping Catholics aren’t generally very good or confident at inviting other people to Mass these days. Mass, particularly for people who’ve never been, or haven’t been for a long time, seems like a different language so why ‘would’ we invite them.
Rather us seeing Mass as a primary means of Evangelisation for non-Mass-goers, however, it’s the source and summit for those people who already go to Mass. We therefore need a tool to help us connect with those people who’re feel like they’re outside of our walls; who don’t feel welcome inside a church building; who don’t feel like they’re part of a community.
Alpha provides a simple, cost effective solution to all these challenges. It give us something to invite people to (a meal and movie), it provides a supportive environment in which people can ask any question, and it draws people together into a tight knit community. Best of all – people often come to a person, life-changing with the person of Jesus.
The video below is terrific – it communicates the importance of us, as members of an existing community, going out and inviting others in. We commence Season 2 of Alpha on Tuesday 2nd February in the about-to-be-completed Parish Centre at OLR. While our quota for Season 2 is already full (what great news!!), if you, or someone you’d like to invited is interested in doing Alpha in Season 3 9School Term 3), please email Jacinta [email protected]
