Celebrating Reconciliation in Lent Mar 19, 2021

Fifth Sunday Of Lent

During the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent, the People of God are encouraged to celebrate the Sacrament of God’s Mercy: Reconciliation. We use the language of mercy very deliberately because while a penitent does indeed confess their sins to God through an ordained priest, the focus is on receiving God’s unconditional Mercy and Reconciliation – a welcome back into the unconditional covenant of love made visible in Jesus Christ. Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent prepares us for Easter by cleansing us from sin and offering new life.

Preaching in 2015 about God’s mercy, Pope Francis said, “First of all, God always forgives us. He never tires of this. It’s we who get tired of asking for forgiveness. But HE does not tire of pardoning us.” While priests will be available to celebrate Reconciliation during Holy Week in our other Hinterland and Coastal Communities, we will be celebrating the Second Rite of Reconciliation at OLR church on Saturday 27th March starting at 8.30am. The Second Rite consists of a communal penitential service followed by individual confession and absolution. Since our sin affects the relationships we have with others, it’s only fitting that we celebrate Reconciliation during Lent as a community.

You are welcome to celebrate the Sacrament of Mercy with us no matter who you are or where you live. Please sign in at the doors as you arrive to comply with COVID regulations.

Note: There will be no 9am Mass on Sat 27th March.
