Adapting to Change

Our parish is at a pivotal moment as it faces the reality of losing 2 of its 4 priests – and the unavoidable flow-on effects to communities. This challenge necessitates thoughtful adaptation to maintain the integrity of Eucharistic worship while recognizing the practical constraints of clergy availability and the geographical nature of our parish. While reducing the number of Masses may initially cause discomfort, this change offers an opportunity to respond creatively and meaningfully, preserving the heart of our parish – the Eucharist. Though no worship center is more than a 15-20 minute drive from another, the emotional difficulty of reducing Masses is real. This type of change – necessary as it may be – requires consideration of both the logistical and emotional needs of all the faithful – lay and ordained alike. Instead of introducing lay-led liturgies, however, consolidating Masses allows us to prioritize celebration of the Eucharist, fostering unity and a higher level of spiritual engagement.

The Centrality of the Eucharist

As the “source and summit” of Christian life, celebration of – not just reception of – the Eucharist must remain central to our worship, despite logistical challenges. The forced reduction of the number of Masses allows us to focus on this sacred ministry in a more sustainable way. We must approach this transition with a sense of interdependence – each of us both seeking and providing pastoral support for ourselves and others to ensure that the change is understood as an adaptation, not a reduction in faith.

Quality Over Quantity

Reducing Masses does not diminish spiritual nourishment. Fewer Masses can result in more intentional, reverent celebrations, as priests have more time for prayerful preparation, homilies, and pastoral care – both before and afterwards. This shift requires patience from parishioners who may miss the previous frequency and convenience of Mass times.

Encouraging Larger Gatherings

The proximity of our worship centers offers an opportunity to foster unity through larger Masses, which strengthen community and reflect the universal nature of the Church. While some parishioners may feel disconnected from their community or intimidated by larger gatherings, open dialogue, welcoming parishioners and environments, and smaller group interactions within these gatherings can ease this transition. Traveling to neighboring Mass centers also promotes cross-community relationships, shared ministries, and greater solidarity, helping parishioners embrace the broader identity of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Parish.

Deepening Spiritual Life

To support those most affected by these changes, we must offer more spiritual and community-centered opportunities. One community, for example, offered a wonderful Advent-themed carols service on Sunday afternoon last week. Strengthening faith formation, pastoral care, and outreach will ensure that the needs of all parishioners continue to be met.

A Path Forward

This transition calls for collaboration, communication, and flexibility. Focusing on the opportunities this time reveals will help us maintain our commitment to celebration of the Eucharist and foster deeper unity within our parish. While change brings feelings of loss and confusion, we must support one another, viewing this moment not as a loss, but as an opportunity for growth, renewal, and a strengthened sense of belonging to our parish. In doing so, we reaffirm our identity as one Body of Christ in one parish, committed to the mission of leading others to encounter Jesus.

Peace and Blessings, Fr Josh
