Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself

The readings for this week emphasise the closeness of God's law, the supremacy of Christ, and the call to love our neighbour with mercy. In Deuteronomy, Moses reassures the people that God's commandments are not distant or impossible to follow; rather, they are already present in their hearts, waiting to be lived out. This aligns with Paul’s message to the Colossians, which highlights Christ as the visible image of the invisible God, the one in whom all things exist and through whom all creation is reconciled. Together, these readings remind us that God’s will is not an abstract mystery, but something deeply embedded in both divine revelation and our own hearts, drawing us into relationship with Him through Christ.

Summary

  • God's commandments are close to us, meant to be lived out.
  • Christ is the image of God, the centre of all creation.
  • The Good Samaritan parable teaches love and mercy.
  • True morality is about action, not just belief.
  • Our moral life is shaped by the free choices we make.
  • As children, we follow rules without fully understanding them; as we mature, we develop our conscience.
  • Our choices reveal who we are and shape who we become.

Additional Reading and Resources

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

The activity that we call prayer can hardly be made the object of a commandment. If two people have to be commanded to talk to each other, their relationship obviously does not have a lot going for it. Besides, it will not work. Perhaps two people can be made to speak words to each other, but they cannot be made to communicate. This happens only when they want to share something with each other. Communication is one of the expressions of love. When Jesus talked about prayer he revealed to us its unsuspected depths, and he spoke about God’s side of the communication.

Reading: At Home with Gods People Pages 17-26

Summary

  • Prayer is a two way communication between us and God
  • There are many different ways of praying. One may use a set of formulas – the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Rosary, the Psalms or something more spontaneous and personal.
  • Our prayer response may be in the form of adoration, praise or thanksgiving. It may take the form of expressing sorrow for sin. Again, it may be petition for one’s own needs or those of others. It may in fact be anything, as long as it comes from the heart.

Additional Reading and Resources

  • Hallow Catholic Mediation Prayer and Sleep App

"Hallow is an excellent resource for people searching for deeper spiritual lives, especially the younger generation of Catholics today. It helps make clear that a relationship with God is and can be extremely personal and can be a great source of peace, joy, and strength."
