Meet Maureen Allen
How long have you been a parishioner?
I have been attending Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church for 50 years or so. In the early 70’s Grant and I and the children spent all school holidays at Currimundi Lake and we always went to Sunday Mass and Easter ceremonies at OLR. I have been a permanent parishioner since the mid 90’s.
Where is your place of worship?
Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Caloundra attending 5.00pm Mass on a Saturday evening.
What is your favourite prayer/devotion?
I don’t have a favourite prayer. I talk to God sporadically during the day and night. What I find most prayerful are the words of particular hymns, especially hymns by Monica Brown, Trisha Watts, Taize and others. When I first heard the expression “He who sings prays twice” this really resonated with me. I find hymns to be very meaningful and speak to me of God’s love.
How do you like to live out your faith?
I love going to Mass first and foremost. I also try to live out my faith by caring for my family – I have 7 children, 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. I like helping neighbours and people in the community through volunteering in different areas. I have recently completed an eight week Pastoral Care Volunteer course at Southern Cross Aged Care facility.
What is your experience of God’s love?
I believe God’s love manifests through people’s love and kindness. My mother would be a great example of that. I experienced God’s love through the devotion, love and care of my wonderful husband and throughout our 61 years of marriage; becoming parents to our beautiful family; a Marriage Encounter weekend, Cursillo and many other times. I just know that God loves me.
What do you most enjoy about being a part of the parish community?
The spirit of friendliness and acceptance of our parish community which is expressed through the many groups within the parish. I like being actively in service and ministry, whether it is proclaiming the Word of God, or being a Communion Minister among other things.
Faithful Servants is a regular feature of the ever-present ‘servants of the faith’ across our local parish community.
Please email Bernadette Bain, if you would like to nominate someone for this feature.
