Saint Vincent de Paul – We Say Thank You!

You probably know the St Vincent de Paul society works in our Parish, provides material assistance and companionship to those in need in our community. There has been a Vincentian presence in our area from before Our Lady of the Rosary Parish was formally established in 1972. The first conference in Caloundra was operating around 1966. The work of St Vincent de Paul Society is underpinned by a spirituality inspired by our patron St Vincent de Paul and Founder Blessed Frederick Ozanam. We endeavour to see the face of Christ in every person we assist. Being a Vincentian allows our members to live out their faith in action, gathering for regular conference meetings to organise and report on the works they do, to pray, to reflect and to help one another in their journey of faith.

There are now five St Vincent de Paul Conferences and two Vinnies charity shops within our parish. Over 90 members and associate members, along with 95 shop volunteers, respond to the needs of people experiencing difficulties. Central to the work of the Society has been the support and involvement of the members from our parish communities.

Whilst we are well known for providing food and clothing in emergency situations our conferences also offer a hand up to families and individuals through our education support programs, housing programs and general advocacy to assist them regain long-term independence.

Life has become more complex and for some, particularly challenging. Our capacity to respond has been made possible by the continued support of the parish and broader community through donations to our charity shops, fund raising appeals, government grants and special bequests. Fund raisers such as the annual Sunshine Coast Sleepout, so ably supported by Fr Josh and Fr Gerard, local school principals and community champion Les Pontin make an enormous difference. With the recent 2025 Sleepout our sleepers raised over $178,000. The Sleepout funds have allowed local conferences to provide emergency accommodation and other housing support for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.

Members also raised funds through local barbecues– purchasing a sausage and onion can help a family with a child’s return to school needs. Supporting the ever-popular book and plant sales ensures ongoing support for those in need of some assistance. Our partnerships with local schools and community organisations play a very big part in our Christmas hamper programs. For some, Christmas can be a stressful and lonely time, and the gift of a hamper is a simple and practical gesture of friendship and support for people who may be alone or doing it a bit tough.

Your support through the Winter and Christmas appeals has contributed to our five Conferences providing 5750 community members with over $322,000 of assistance in the past twelve months. On behalf of all those we help we extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for your generosity and support.
