Installation of Archbishop Shane Mackinlay

On Thursday, 11 September, I travelled to Brisbane to be present at the installation Mass of Archbishop Shane Mackinlay at St Stephen’s Cathedral. It was a privilege to witness this historic moment with over 800 lay people, 33 bishops and 200 priests from around Australia, as he became the eighth leader of the Brisbane Archdiocese.
During his homily, Archbishop Mackinlay remarked, “While I come from somewhere else, I don’t come as an outsider.” He went on to reflect, “Whenever we gather as Christians, we gather as part of the one Church of Jesus Christ, as parts of His body into which each of us has been baptised and with which we have together been entrusted with His mission.”
Archbishop Mackinlay also affirmed the outcomes from last year’s archdiocesan synod and expressed his hope to continue implementing them. He described Brisbane as “a vibrant community of faith that lives out its commitment to carrying on in our own time the mission that Jesus has entrusted to us.” He concluded, “I look forward to serving the Church of Brisbane as we develop our response to God’s Word in our place and our time.”
I captured the accompanying photo after the recessional hymn at the Cathedral, which I hope conveys something of the joy and solemnity of this occasion.

An Invitation to Serve: Funeral Sacristan Ministry

Every funeral we celebrate in our parish is an opportunity to accompany grieving families, surround them with love, and commend their loved ones into God’s eternal care. Behind the scenes, this sacred ministry is supported by our funeral sacristans—generous parishioners who prepare the church, set up the sacred vessels, and ensure that everything runs smoothly during the Funeral Mass or Liturgy.

At present, we are blessed with two dedicated funeral sacristans who faithfully carry out this important role. With the number of funerals in our parish, however, and to provide support when someone is away or when several funerals occur in a short time, we are seeking to welcome an additional person into this ministry.

Becoming a funeral sacristan is not about having special skills but about having a servant’s heart—someone who is prayerful, reliable, and willing to walk gently with families during a tender time of grief. Training and ongoing support will be provided. If you feel the Holy Spirit stirring your heart to serve in this way, or if you would like to know more about what’s involved, please contact the parish office on 5430 9390 or email ca*******@**************et.au
Together, we can continue to care for families with dignity, compassion, and faith.

A Year of Engagement

Lord God, I say yes to your will for me:

To live out my baptism in obedience to you.

As a member of our parish,

I commit myself to your mission of invitation:

To be vibrant like your Son, to extend myself in charity,

and to actively accompany people to encounter Jesus.

Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
