Easter: More Than a Moment — A Life to Be Lived

There is something unmistakably beautiful about Easter. No matter how often we come, Easter has a way of drawing us in. Perhaps it’s the light after darkness, the music, the sense of hope in the air, or simply the quiet intuition that something important—something true—is being celebrated. And it is.

At the heart of Easter is not just a message, but a mystery: that Jesus Christ, who was crucified and died, is alive. Not alive in memory, not alive in metaphor, but truly, personally, alive. Death does not have the final word; love does, and that changes everything. It means that whatever in our lives feels buried—grief, guilt, fear, or disappointment—need not remain in the grave. Easter proclaims that Jesus is not distant from those places, but rather enters them, transforms them, and brings life where we had quietly resigned ourselves to loss.

But here is where the mystery of Easter becomes even more profound. Easter is not simply something that happened. It is something that is happening. As Archbishop Mark used to say before he retired, “If Easter isn’t always and everywhere, it’s never and nowhere.” In other words, if the Resurrection is only something we celebrate once a year, we’ve missed its power because the risen Christ is not confined to a moment in history—He is present now, in the midst of our lives. He is present in our ordinary days; He is present in our questions and struggles; He is present in our hopes, our relationships, and our searching; and He is not passive.

Through the gift of His Holy Spirit, Jesus continues to act—speaking, guiding, healing, and renewing. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is not locked in the past but offered to us now—not abstractly, but personally. This is the heart of my vision for every person who comes into our parish.

My vision is like a painting that depicts something of our destination: a parish where every person—young and old, lifelong Catholic or simply curious—has the opportunity to encounter the living Jesus. Not just to know about Him, but to know Him personally; to experience the quiet, gentle, but real transformation that comes through His presence in our lives. Because Christianity, at its core, is not about obligation or routine, but about freedom and relationship with Jesus—a relationship that, like any other, grows through time, attention, and openness.

Easter tells us that the story is not over and that new beginnings are possible. It tells us that hope is not naïve—but grounded in something real. It tells us that Jesus is not a figure of the past, but a presence in the present. And perhaps most importantly, it tells us that we are invited to a celebration and to a fullness of life marked by joy, by purpose, by a growing awareness that God is nearer than we often imagine.

For some, that next step might be as simple as coming back again next Sunday. For others, it might be finding a few minutes in the day to speak honestly to God, or exploring one of the many ways our parish seeks to support faith and community.

Wherever you are in your faith journey, whatever your story, there is a place here for you—not because we have everything figured out, but because together, we are learning what it means to live in the light of the Resurrection.

This Easter, as we celebrate with joy the Resurrection of the Lord, may we also remain open to its deeper meaning: that Christ is alive, that He is not finished with us yet. May your Easter be blessed with love, joy, and peace.
